Bates Named Department of Finance Chair at Arizona State University

Thomas Bates

Thomas Bates (PhD '00) was named Department of Finance chair at Arizona State University's W. P. Carey School of Business. Bates, an associate professor and a Dean's Council of 100 Distinguished Scholar, teaches courses in corporate finance. His research focuses on the contracting environment in mergers and acquisitions, corporate liquidity decisions and cash holdings, and the governance of corporations. Bates is a regular contributor to esteemed finance journals such as The Journal of Finance and Journal of Financial Economics. The textbook, Fundamentals of Corporate Finance (Wiley), that he coauthored is set for release in 2011. His other service in the field includes serving on conference program committees and acting as a referee for a variety of major journals. Bates held prior academic appointments at the University of Arizona, University of Delaware, and University of Western Ontario. He was named McCoy-Rogers Fellow and received the Scrivner Teaching and Service Award while a faculty member at the Eller College School of Management.
