Phi Beta Lambda Competitiors Take 1st and 4th Places in State and National Ethics Competitions

The student business organization, Phi Beta Lambda, sponsored by the Berg Center and CBA, has won first place in the ethics case competition at the state level and fourth place at the national level. This is Phi Beta Lambda's first year of existence at the University of Pittsburgh and first time competing.

Students comprising the ethics team are Carrie Tersigni and Kathryn Connor, both students in the Certificate Program in Leadership and Ethics (CPLE). The women traveled with the larger group of Phi Beta Lambda participants to the annual State Leadership Conference in Harrisburg in April and the national conference in Chicago in June. In Chicago, the PBL ethics team competed against 24 teams from around the country. Over 1,600 college students attended the national conference.

The business ethics teams dissect a hypothetical ethical dilemma for judges. Each team presents a five-minute debate on the case. Teams are judged on the ability to argue the ethical dilemma effectively. Carrie and Kathryn were coached in their preparation by Ray Jones, CPLE coordinator.

Currently, Phi Beta Lambda is in its first year at the University of Pittsburgh. The organization is comprised of over 50 undergraduate business students who represent the span of business majors. PBL's mission is to advance leadership, ethics, and professional development. This year, all of Phi Beta Lambda's members will be competing in over 35 events at the Conference, including the Business Ethics event.
