Berg Center Down on the Farm
The David Berg Center for Ethics and Leadership has launched a new effort focusing on sustainable agriculture. In partnership with Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), students from Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie in São Paulo, Brazil, engaged in a project to better understand how the food supply chain operates in the Pittsburgh region and nationally. Students traced the local food system beginning with a visit to the Harvest Valley Farms in Valencia, Pa., and through key distribution centers in the region.
Their project also included a visit to Eat 'n Park Hospitality Group's Homestead, Pa., headquarters and Jamie Moore, director of sourcing and sustainability, who discussed Eat 'n Park's participation in the PASA Buy Local, Buy Fresh initiative. Students then enjoyed a lunch with Brooks Broadhurst, senior vice president of food and beverage at Eat'n Park Hospitality Group, prepared with food from the Harvest Valley Farms.
Students later participated in robust crosstalk about what they had seen and shared comparisons between the United States and Brazil and their opinions on corporate responsibility and its impact on global sustainability within the agriculture industry.
