Michael Kijowski
Hello and welcome. My name is Mike Kijowski, and I am a member of the team of academic advisors in the College of Business Administration here at the University of Pittsburgh. So that you may feel more comfortable working with me, I would like to tell you a little bit about myself.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and began a three-year career in public education. Following a project with the United States Government working as a manager, I began to explore careers in sales and gained insight into both indirect and direct sales, as well as experience in customer service.
I spent the next 15 years in the private sector developing a wide range of business and marketing skills and endeavoring to gain the most out of each day’s experiences. I suppose that is one of my paramount philosophies: One learns from each day and every interaction, and that in turn leads to a constant development of who you are.
Throughout this period, I also continued to instruct and coach the sport of fencing, with students ranging in age from 11 to 50. In this way, I maintained my connection with teaching. Ultimately this journey has led me back to a career in higher education as an academic advisor, and it is my sincere hope that these experiences, as well as the amazing amount of resources available at the University, will help you find the answers you seek during your college career.
Do not hesitate to ask questions when you have them. I promise that if I do not have the answer, I will do my best to find it. On a more personal note, if you need an ice breaker when you come and talk to me, I can talk endlessly about world travel, the places I have visited, and the experiences I have had. Of course, I still enjoy fencing, and you might be surprised to know what hobby my interest in history has led to, so come on in and find out.
Good luck in your career. Keep your eyes and ears open, and remember the learning does not stop when you graduate.
