Succeed in Your Career
In addition to all the other topics we have highlighted in previous sections of our website, there are is another aspect of your career development that you want to develop in order to be successful in your next step: skill development.
In addition to your coursework and prior career development experiences, when employers hire new grads, they expect you to have basic workplace skills and how to effectively transition into your new role.
It is important that you evaluate your skill set and if needed, look for ways to improve key skills. Refer to the resources below to help you develop a strong set of professional business skills.
Those first few days, weeks, months on the job are critical to help you set the stage for long-term career success. You don't want to be "That new one" who just doesn't seem to be clicking with the organization. It is important to spend time after you initially start to observe the climate and culture of your employer and find ways to become integrated. While it is important to find ways to stand out from your colleagues, you want to make sure you are doing so in ways that will lead to positive outcomes and opportunities. For more information on how to be success in your transition, refer to the Etiquette and how to be successful on the job guides listed in the Documents section below. You should also always consult your employee handbook or manager if you have employer specific questions.
