Living Learning Community Frequently Asked Questions

Who can live on the CBA Living Learning Community?
Incoming freshmen who are planning to pursue a major within the College of Business Administration are eligible to apply to live on the CBA LLC floor. There are openings for a total of 45 students, including men and women (a Resident Assistant, an upperclassmen CBA student, will also live on the floor). Potential LLC students must be willing to actively create a supportive community atmosphere by taking part in and helping to develop social, academic, and business-oriented programs throughout the academic year. You can view the criteria for admission here.
Why would I want to live on the CBA LLC floor instead of in a regular dorm?
The CBA LLC is a “regular dorm” in that it is housed on the third floor of Sutherland Hall West, which is coed, and is inhabited mostly by freshmen. Sutherland, which is located on upper campus near the world-class Peterson Events Center, has the added bonuses of having its own computer lab (open 24/7) and a dining hall, and being within close proximity to the International Living Learning Community, which is on the second floor.
Basically, living on the CBA LLC floor means that you can have the best of both worlds. As a resident of the CBA LLC, you will have the opportunity to:
  • get the freshman-dorm experience of having a roommate and meeting new friends within CBA and from the other schools at the University of Pittsburgh;
  • network with other CBA students, faculty, staff and administration in order to make connections that will help you during your academic career and beyond;
  • take advantage of the great programs offered exclusively to CBA LLC residents. Click here to view some of the diverse programs that have taken place in the past.
  • “stay in the loop” about the many events, workshops and other opportunities offered through CBA, including those within various business business-student organizations and honors societies.
  • get a jump start on practicing your leadership skills as an active member of the community!
Does living on the CBA LLC floors limit you to only interacting with business students?
Definitely not! Knowing other business students is very beneficial to your college career, but it’s also important to expand your horizons. The opportunities to meet other students are endless. Including the CBA LLC floor and the International Living Learning Community, Sutherland houses a total of 768 students—most of whom are freshmen—from many different backgrounds, interests, and intended majors.
During your freshman year, you’ll take the majority of your classes in the School of Arts and Sciences, which will also expose you to many non-business students. There are hundreds of opportunities to get involved in student organizations—including everything from soccer to the Student Government Board to the Campus Fools. Here is a link to the Student Organization Resource Center, which provides a tool to look up some of the organizations available on campus.
Is there an additional cost to live in the LLC?
No. You will pay the associated costs of living in Sutherland Hall.
