LLC Programs & Activities
In addition to the pizza fests, study breaks, Superbowl parties, and other events common to most freshman dorms, every year the Living Learning Community students, resident assistants, and CBA staff organize a variety of programs for the residents of the CBA Living Learning Community. The programs vary from year to year, but below is a representative sample of past programs and events:
- “Welcome to CBA” Reception with CBA administration, faculty and staff: LLC students are given the opportunity to network with CBA faculty and staff, and with Associate Dean Palascak and Dean Delaney in an informal setting;
- Multicultural awareness programming including: an international restaurant tour, a German-heritage lunch buffet at the Penn Brewery, and the Carnegie International Exhibit;
- Academic workshops with some of the following themes: study skills, time management, and test-taking strategies/preparing for finals;
- Movie nights with Professor Ray Jones, who, in 2006, was named one of Business Week’s Favorite Undergraduate Professors;
- Sports outings including Pitt football, Pitt basketball, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Pittsburgh Pirates games;
- Professional development workshops hosted by the CBA Career and Leadership Development Center and Career Services , including the following themes: résumé writing, building team work and leadership skills, and tips on finding an internship;
- Fundraising events for charities including Family House and the Make-A-Wish Foundation;
- Cultural outings and dinner with Associate Dean Palascak including the following venues: The Mattress Factory (an installation-based museum), the Carnegie International Exhibition at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pitt Repertory Theater’s production of “Tales of the Lost Formicans,” and The Andy Warhol Museum;
- Business Etiquette Dinner: This annual capstone event is facilitated by representatives from local corporations who offer the LLC students tips about dining and networking protocol while they’re enjoying a full-course meal dressed in their most professional outfits. All LLC residents attend this special event—which also serves as an awards and recognition ceremony—as well as representatives from the Office of Residence Life, and CBA faculty and staff. As a special treat, Dean John Delaney and Associate Dean Edward Palascak take the opportunity to address the students, reflecting upon the accomplishments of the past year and offering inspiration as the students make the important transition from being freshmen to being upperclassmen.
