LLC Hosts Its Annual Business Etiquette Dinner

CBA Living Learning Community (LLC) held its annual Business Etiquette Dinner in April 2009 in the Lower Lounge of the William Pitt Union. Fifty-five people attended the event, including students, members of the Pitt Business Community, and CBA alumni.

A special addition to this year's dinner was the inclusion of four distinguished CBA alumni: Ian Buggs (CBA '03), a financial analyst at MEDRAD; Christy Tarconish (CBA '07), technology coach and director of new representative Development at Northwestern Mutual Financial Network; Les A. Scales (CBA '06), a credit analyst with PNC Financial Services Group; and Zachary D. Tucker (CBA '05), an analyst at the United States Steel Corporation. Current students enjoyed talking with the alumni about their career paths and learning more about their respective employers.

Kathleen Rafferty began the evening by acknowledging the accomplishments of the LLC students and LLC Resident Assistant, Melinda Gorentz. Later in the evening, Gorentz discussed LLC highlights from the academic year and previewed upcoming events.

The etiquette presentation was given by Holly Sommer, a campus recruiter from Deloitte, who provided details about the finer points of dining in a business context, while a multi-course meal was served by waitstaff. Topics included managing cutlery, glasses, and one's napkin, as well as making small talk and using proper table manners. Sommer also quizzed students about how they would handle awkward scenarios, awarding those who answered correctly with a prize. The students were given booklets to take home so that they could brush up on their knowledge before their next professional dining experience.

Associate Dean Ed Palascak closed the evening by again praising students for their achievements of the academic year and recognizing them as future business leaders.
