An Overview - Cycle Time Reduction and Quality Improvement

About This Seminar

Two major approaches for process improvement, "Lean" and "Six Sigma" methodologies, emerged separately in the 20th century. Lean production principles focus on cycle time reduction and bottleneck management while Six Sigma focuses on the removal of process defects and the reduction of process variability. Ironically, Six Sigma and Lean were often regarded as rival initiatives. However, only recently have organizations realized how complimentary and synergistic these approaches are. Therefore, the most successful improvement initiatives today use a combined Lean Six Sigma approach, with much more success and faster improvements than those realized through either initiative. We present an overview of Lean Six Sigma which has emerged as process improvement methodology of choice in manufacturing and service industries alike.

Professor Bio

Dr. G.G. Hegde has been teaching and conducting research in operations management at the Katz Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh, since 1985. He has also taught at the University of Rochester, Duke University, and at Georgetown University as a visiting faculty. His research papers spanning the areas of product design, manufacturing, and cost management have appeared in national and international refereed publications. His consulting experiences have been in the area of business engineering and reengineering efforts, process modeling and CRM implementation in health care industry, and quality management. Professor Hegde holds a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester, and his masters degrees are in operations research and statistics.
