CBA Penny Wars
CBA students’ spare change made a difference in the life of one local family this holiday season. Organized by the Undergraduate Women in Business (WIB) Club, the CBA Penny Wars raised nearly $350 for a local family in need by pitting CBA organizations and offices against one another.
For two weeks, bags bearing the names of CBA organizations and offices were placed in the hallway of CBA’s Sennott Square headquarters. Students were encouraged to drop their spare coins into the bags observing the following rules:
- for every penny in its bag, the organization/office earned one point;
- for every silver coin, the organization/office lost points equal to the denomination of the coin (e.g., a 25-point loss for a quarter); and
- the organization/office with the most points at the end of two weeks won bragging rights.
With 200 points, Phi Chi Theta, Pitt’s collegiate chapter of the national coeducational professional fraternity in business and economics, won bragging rights, but the Roberto Clemente Minority Business Association raised the most money.
All proceeds from CBA Penny Wars were used to purchase food and gifts for a family in need identified through St. Paul’s (Roman Catholic) Cathedral. WIB also purchased gifts from a wish list prepared by the family’s children. Through these and other efforts, WIB raised more than $1,000 for the family.
