Profile

While serving as Dean of the Katz School since 1997, Winter was widely recognized as an academic innovator based on his unique success in strategic planning in academic institutions and his marketing outreach programs. His faculty-staff phantom stock option plan at Pitt has also received national and international recognition and acclaim.

In 2005, Winter stepped down as dean to resume professorial duties. During his first two years back into teaching, he received Distinguished Teaching Awards from the College of Business Administration.

Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh, Winter was dean of the School of Management at the State University of New York in Buffalo for four years and head of the Department of Business Administration at the University of Illinois, where he served on the faculty for 23 years, initially as an assistant professor in the marketing area. At Illinois he received the MBA Program Teaching Award, the Graduate Teaching Award, the Executive MBA Teaching Award, and the Executive Development Teaching Award. He has also held teaching or research appointments at INSEAD (France), Indiana University, and Cornell University.

Winter received his PhD from Purdue University where he also received his master’s degree (Krannert Scholar Award). He received his BS (cum laude) in industrial engineering from Lehigh University. He is widely regarded as a specialist in marketing strategy, marketing management, business-to-business marketing, and services marketing. He has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Marketing Research, one of the leading journals in his field. His research has been published in the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of Marketing, and Management Science, Journal of Business Venturing, and Interfaces.

Winter has been a consultant to more than 50 different firms, including: Caterpillar Corporation, McDonnell Douglas, Graphic Controls, FMC John Deere, Indotronix, and PACCAR. He has served on the Boards of Directors of Rand Capital (Buffalo), Bell Sports Corporation (Phoenix—no longer public), and Innovation Works (Pittsburgh). He is currently on the boards of BlackRock Liquidity Funds (New York); and Indotronix International Corporation (Poughkeepsie, NY), Alkon Corporation (Freemont, Ohio), and Tippmann Industries (Chicago/Fort Wayne).
