Graduate and Undergraduate Certificate Programs
Certificate Program in International Business for Undergraduates
This program, begun in the 2001-02 academic year, allows a College of Business Administration student to bring an international focus to his or her major (management, marketing, finance, or accounting). The program requires 16 foreign language credits (or the equivalent skill level), as well as two required courses ("Key Issues in International Economics for Managers" and "International Dimensions of Organizational Behavior") and electives with international content and world or comparative issues. In addition, students in the Certificate Program must study abroad for one term or complete an international internship. A faculty member with international expertise works with each student as a mentor. Click here to learn more about the Certificate Program in International Business.
Certificate Program in Global Studies
A new initiative of the University is the Undergraduate Certificate Program in Global Studies (UCPGS). This certificate is designed to provide students with "global competence"—the ability to work effectively in different international settings, awareness of the major currents of global changes and issues arising from such changes, knowledge of global organizations and business activities, capacity for effective communications across cultural and linguistic boundaries, and adaptability to diverse cultures. The certificate requires five courses: one is an introduction to global studies; two are in a world region concentration (West Europe, Russia/East Europe, Asia, or Latin America); and two are in one of four thematic concentrations (Sustainable Development, Globalized Economy and Global Governance, Changing Identities, Technology and Society) and therefore focus on issues that emerge as international economies become more interdependent. The certificate also requires at least second year competence in a foreign language. Click here to learn more about the Certificate Program in Global Studies.
Certificate in Area Studies
The University offers undergraduate certificate programs through its four area-studies centers (Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, Russian and East European Studies, West European Studies). Area-Studies certificates involve achieving foreign language proficiency and depth of understanding in one particular world region. Students are encouraged to apply for admission to a certificate program in their freshmen or sophomore year; there are no special admission requirements. Each undergraduate Area-Studies certificate program requires five courses in the respective work area: one in the student's major and four in at least two departments other than the major.
