The Academic WorldQuest international knowledge competition for high school students occurs yearly. In cooperation with the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh the IBC hosted the Seventh Annual Academic WorldQuest competition for high school students on February 6, 2009. KQV News Radio also co-sponsored the event.
Shady Side Academy Wins Academic WorldQuest 2009; Travels To Washington
The team of students from Shady Side Academy emerged victorious in this year's Academic WorldQuest competition, which was held Friday, Feb. 6 at the Soldiers & Sailors Military Museum & Memorial Hall in Oakland. Pittsburgh Allderdice High School came in a close second, and Franklin Regional and Upper St. Clair high schools tied for third place.
Academic WorldQuest is a knowledge-based competition with questions focusing on world cultures, geography, world flags, global business and economics, world history, current international affairs, globalization, people in the news, and general world knowledge. As the winning team from this event, Shady Side Academy will participate in the National Academic WorldQuest competition in Washington, D.C., on Sat., April 4 at the National Press Club. The National Academic WorldQuest competition will involve teams representing World Affairs Councils in more than 50 U.S. cities. Participants at the national competition will enjoy a weekend of exciting activities and a discussion with a prominent speaker. This year's event included 224 students from 56 schools. Participating high schools also included: Albert Gallatin, Aliquippa, Ambridge, Avella Area, Avonworth, Baldwin, Brentwood, Burgettstown, Burrell, Butler, Canon McMillan, Carlynton, Central Catholic, Chartiers-Houston, City Charter, Derry Area, Fort Cherry, Fox Chapel Area, Gateway, Greenville, Hampton, Hempfield, Hillel Academy, Keystone Oaks, The Kiski School, Laurel, Lincoln, McGuffey, Mohawk, Moon Area, Mt. Lebanon, North Allegheny, Northside Urban Pathways, Oil City, Peters Township, Pine-Richland, Quaker Valley, Riverside, Riverview, Schenley, Serra Catholic, Seton-LaSalle, Shady Side Academy, Shaler, South Park, Springdale, Sto-Rox, Trinity, Valley, Vincentian, West Allegheny, Winchester Thurston and Woodland Hills.
