Information Systems (IS) Interest Group

Across industries and sectors, organizational success depends on the ability of managers to lead efforts that use technology to support the introduction of new products, the efficient management of supply chain relationships, and the effective management of complex financial activities. For example:

  • Retailers develop and deploy Web-based systems to streamline customer interaction,
  • Financial services firms rely on electronic distribution channels to reach new markets and distribute new products, and
  • Consulting and service firms apply knowledge management systems and collaboration technologies to bring together employees from all over the world to solve critical problems.

Billions of dollars are spent on technology each year, yet much of it is wasted because firms fail to account for the complexity of information systems. Managers purchase irrelevant or inadequate software because they don’t understand the dynamics of technology markets and standards. Multimillion dollar enterprise systems are underutilized because poor user interface design makes them difficult for business users to learn and apply. Business unit managers miss opportunities to strategically implement emerging technologies because they are unable to effectively collaborate with technology professionals.

The Information Systems Interest Group focuses on research and educational programs that aim to improve individuals’ and organizations’ abilities to bring together people, policies, technology, and data in a timely fashion, while avoiding the pitfalls and risks associated with implementing and managing complex systems.
