Operations, Decision Sciences, and Artificial Intelligence (Operations)
The business environment has changed dramatically in the past few years in many respects. The most significant change has been in terms of how decisions are made. More and more, businesses are using technology to help them make decisions. This change is being driven by two factors, the cost and speed of using technology. Data collection is being automated, with resulting improvements in the quality, quantity, and costs of data collection. Methods for using the data collected are becoming more sophisticated—yet easier to use—as faster computers make analysis more rapid and output reports easier to decipher.
The courses and programs offered by the Operations Interest Group prepare students to respond to these changes.
Undergraduate
At the undergraduate level, the Operations Interest Group offers honors classes in Quantitative Methods and Operations Management, and electives such as Supply Chain Management.
Graduate
Graduate elective courses can be grouped into three focus areas: supply chain management, project management, and data mining and business analytics.
Students concentrating in operations can pick courses from one or more of these focus areas.
Supply Chain Management
Supply chain management has become especially important as a discipline owing to rapidly expanding supply points and markets in emerging economies. Courses offered relating to supply chain management include Supply Chain Management, Process Engineering, Production Management and Process Improvement, and Simulation and Quality Control. Students are encouraged to take elective courses in areas such as marketing and information systems (IS) to supplement the information presented in these courses.
Project Management
Companies have recognized project management skills as some of the most important skills for professional success. Operations courses in the area of project management complement those offered by the IS and the Strategy, Environment, and Organizations Interest Groups.
Data Mining and Business Analysis
Elective courses in the burgeoning field of data mining and business analysis include Data Mining, Forecasting, and Advanced Decision Models, as well as Competitive Intelligence.
