MBA Perspectives: Tips on a Building a Successful Internship Program

This past summer, I had the opportunity to intern for a private holding company that managed several businesses in a diverse array of industries. Like many of my MBA classmates, I loved my internship. However, I do have several friends who weren't as thrilled with their experience over the summer. Based on conversations I have had with fellow students, there seems to be two key components to a successful MBA internship program: inclusion and variety.

Let your MBA interns' ideas be heard.

  • I was fortunate enough to work with the CEO and President of the company. While I understand most interns won't have that level of exposure to senior management, it's still important that they feel as though their input is adding value. One way to provide access to senior leadership is to allow interns participate important meetings. Doing so gives them a chance to learn about what's going on at the macro-level while also seeing how the project they're working on is helping to address a real business problem, not just busy work.
  • At the end of the internship, if you don't already do so, consider scheduling a final presentation at which your intern or interns report on the project to senior members of the team, department, or organization.

Provide multiple projects/problems for your MBA intern.

  • Even if you have a specific project or problem for your intern to address, make sure they are looking at all the aspects of the problem and not only working on one facet. Having an intern work across departments is a great way to accomplish this.
  • A problem that can be completed within the timeframe of the internship is ideal because the MBA intern wants to feel as though they solved a problem from beginning to end.
