Frequently Asked Questions for the MBA/MS in Engineering Program

Who should consider the MBA/MS in Engineering dual degree?
Anyone with an undergraduate degree in engineering (or the hard sciences), with or without work experience, who is interested in a management career with a significant engineering and/or technological focus.
What are the career opportunities?
There are opportunities in a wide range of function and industries - in general management, operations and production, supply chain management, product/service development, marketing, business development, strategic planning, and consulting, to name a few.
What is the benefit of this dual degree program relative to getting the MBA and MS in Engineering degrees separately?
There are several benefits:
  • You complete both degrees in 20 months (in the full time program) - exactly as long as it takes to complete a normal 2-year MBA alone.
  • Only 64.5 credits are required to complete the full time dual-degree program, versus 87 credits if you added the requirements of the 2-year MBA and the MS in Engineering. (There are similar efficiencies in the Part Time program as well.)
  • The fewer credits also mean cost savings relative to completing the two degrees separately. Estimated costs of the MBA/MS in Engineering program are available
  • Despite these efficiencies, the coursework is designed so that you actually meet the credit requirements of each degree without dilution.
  • The program is designed to be flexible and integrate the engineering and business training to best meet your career goals.
How will recruiters value graduates of the dual-degree program compared to MBA or MS in Engineering graduates?
The most important benefit is long term, in the form of more rapid career advancement. Also, as one recruiter suggested, the very fact that a student has opted for the rigorous and more intensive dual-degree program sends a positive signal about that student's commitment and work ethic -- quite apart from the quality of the education. Finally, graduates of this program may command a starting salary "premium."
Is there a reason to choose the University of Pittsburgh for this program?
The strengths and resources of two excellent schools -- the Katz Graduate School of Business and the Swanson School of Engineering - have been leveraged in designing this flexible program that emphasizes integrated, experience-based learning. The objective is to have a relatively small, high-quality program, in which students receive individual attention.
How do I apply to the program? Do I need to apply to both Business and Engineering schools?
You do not need to apply separately to both schools - you apply online through the Katz School. You do need to be admitted to both schools, but the Business school will forward a copy of your application to Engineering for their evaluation. You will not be required to take the GRE if you are applying to the dual degree - your GMAT scores will be sufficient.
