J. Jeffrey Inman was elected Editor in Chief of the Journal of Consumer Research, the most prestigious journal focused on scholarly research that describes and explains consumer behavior.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions, John E. Prescott, the Thomas O' Brien Chair of Strategy and Professor of Business Administration at the University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and College of Business Administration, has been awarded the University of Pittsburgh's 2017 Provost's Award for Excellence in Mentoring.
The honor, given to only four faculty members university-wide, commends Prescott for his ongoing work with Katz doctoral students. Since 1985, Prescott has served on about 70 dissertation committees and been the chair 21 times. Many of his former students have become tenured or chaired professors at universities all over the world, including Boston University, Indiana University, New York University, University College Dublin, and the University of Kansas.
Prescott, whose expertise is in strategy and competitive intelligence, is known for offering individualized support of his doctoral students, aiding both their academic careers and professional development. Never one to shy from challenging his students, Prescott relentlessly pushes them to succeed and get better.
“The most satisfying aspect of having the opportunity to mentor energetic and bright students is watching how they contribute to society through their research, teaching and service,” Prescott says.
The Katz PhD program has seven areas of study, and they are supported by dedicated professors who provide mentoring support to students.

Another dimension of Prescott’s contributions to the doctoral program is his leadership. Since 2012, he has served as chair of the doctoral committee. He also served as director of the doctoral program from 2004 to 2009 and a member of the doctoral admissions and policy committee from 1994 to 2003.
Additionally, Prescott holds leadership roles that affect the entire Katz School. He is the area director for Organizations and Entrepreneurship and is past chair of the New Curriculum Committee and Master’s Programs Policy Committee.
As an intellectual leader in his field, Prescott is the author of more than 40 referred journal articles, 25 book chapters, and five books. His collective works have generated more than 8,000 citations, according to Google Scholar. His current editorial assignments are with the Journal of Management Studies (Associate Editor), Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, and the Journal of Management.
With Prescott’s award, this is the second consecutive year that a Katz faculty member has received the Provost's Award for Excellence in Mentoring. Professor of Business Administration Dennis Galletta, who heads the doctoral program, received the award last year.
