Members of the Katz/CBA Faculty Recognized for Teaching Excellence
One of the strengths of Katz/CBA is its world-class faculty. In addition to producing outstanding research, the faculty provides a quality of teaching that is unsurpassed. At April graduation ceremonies, Katz/CBA honored the students who had successfully completed our undergraduate and graduate degree programs as well as the faculty, both full- and part-time, who contributed to these students' success and satisfaction.
To recognize the strength of its faculty, Katz and CBA have long maintained an annual teaching awards program to honor the individuals who are most highly regarded for teaching excellence by students.
At the April 25 Katz graduation ceremony, the MBA class of 2008 presented the Outstanding Teacher Award based on student voting. In her salutation, Student Executive Board President Meghan Benya stated, "Most of you know him by his infamously long statistics final and his ability to make decisions in Microsoft Solver that we never thought were possible." The 2008 MBA Outstanding Teacher Award was earned by Professor Prakash Mirchandani.
This year's CBA awards were based on three dimensions of student opinion reported in teaching surveys from the past three terms: intellectual challenge of the course, increase in knowledge, and overall teaching effectiveness. The following awards were presented at the April 26 CBA graduation recognition ceremony:
Best Teaching in a Core Course Award for 2008 was earned by Assistant Professor Leonce Bargeron, who teaches Introduction to Finance.
Best Teaching in the Accounting Major Award for 2008 was earned by Clinical Assistant Professor Jocelyn Kauffunger, who teaches Intermediate Financial Reporting, Financial Statement Analysis, and Tax Accounting.
Best Teaching in the Finance Major Award for 2008 was earned by Associate Professor Shawn Thomas, who teaches Corporate Finance.
Best Teaching in the Marketing Major Award for 2008 was earned by Associate Professor Robert Gilbert, who teaches Introduction to Marketing, Advertising and Promotion and Projects in Marketing.
Best Teaching in the General Management Major Award for 2008 (including courses in the concentrations of organizational behavior, human resources management and management information systems) was earned by Marick Masters, who teaches Negotiation in Business.
Also awarded April 26 were two Teacher of the Year awards in CBA. These awards were given to faculty who had the highest weighted score in the dimensions of intellectual challenge, increased knowledge, and overall teaching effectiveness for all courses taught in CBA. To recognize differences in class size, the award was offered in two categories based on total number of students taught (each category included about 50 faculty members, including full- and part-time faculty, as well as doctoral students):
CBA Teacher of the Year for 2008 in the 50-120 students-taught category was earned by Associate Professor Shawn Thomas.
CBA Teacher of the Year for 2008 in the 121-600 students-taught category was earned by Clinical Assistant Professor Jocelyn Kauffunger.
