NOTES FROM THE DEAN

Over the past two years, I've stressed our vision going forward, the five strategic initiatives that build on our strengths while inspiring us to venture beyond the traditional business education model in order to better prepare our graduates for the highly competitive and complex global business environment that awaits them. At the October 3 grand opening of our new $2.3 million financial analysis laboratory in Mervis Hall, alumni, trustees, faculty, and friends who share our vision witnessed the passing of another milestone in that journey.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

A Case Study Comes to Life at Katz

Case studies have long been valuable tools for business learning. On September 26, Katz students had an opportunity to participate in a unique case study—rather than referring only to printed materials, students were able to query executives and stakeholders who had actually been a part of the events the case was based on. In this instance, the case dealt with the 2006 merger of Bank of New York Mellon and Mellon Financial Corporation. Read more about this extraordinary learning experience>

CBA Career Conference Attracts Record Attendance

What can generate such excitement amongst undergraduates that they would line up at 6:45 in the morning? The answer is the 2008 CBA Career Conference. Held September 19, the event included industry panels, professional development workshops, a networking luncheon, and an informational fair. Read more about this year's conference, which drew a record number of student attendees>

Katz Experience Carries Through to Leadership in China

Frank Gaoning Ning (MBA '85) was one of 12 prestigious alumni honored as Legacy Laureates by the University in October. Ning, the chair of COFCO-one of the world's largest food manufacturers, has been recognized five times as one of the 25 most influential business leaders by Chinese Entrepreneur magazine. In a talk called Food Security, Agriculture and Business: China and Beyond, he shared insights gleaned from his extensive experience in the food manufacturing and import-export business. Read more about Ning's leadership experience and his October 23 presentation to Pitt students, faculty, and staff>

The Exponential Power of Coaching

Vern Cameron (EMBA '08) is proof that the power of coaching and good leadership is exponential. As someone who defines his own success by the accomplishments of those he has mentored, Cameron is a smashing success. The benefits of his coaching affect not only those directly involved in the mentoring relationship with Cameron but trickle down to his mentees' direct reports as the mentees put Cameron's coaching style into practice. Read more about Cameron and the exponential impact of his coaching>

When Can You Steal First Base?

In the game of baseball a player can never steal first base. But during the seventh game of the 1960 World Series—the last game to be played in Pittsburgh's beloved Forbes Field—the father of Katz alumnus Nick Demao (BS '63, MBA '67) was so elated by Bill Mazeroski hitting the game-winning homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning that he stole first base. The younger Demao brought the 'bag' and his memories of that October afternoon in 1960 to this year's anniversary celebration of the final game of the 1960 World Series. Read more about the anniversary celebration and the Demaos' piece of history>
