NOTES FROM THE DEAN

What Matters Most?

As we enter the holiday season and a new year, it is natural to ask this question and reflect on whether our lives are centered on the people and activities most important to us. In a year of significant financial market volatility, economic uncertainty, and concern about the planet, I wish to focus this column on people and accomplishments that are especially important to the Katz/CBA community.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

A Profile in Courage

Photo of Jennifer Lynn Burroughs

Part-time MBA student Jennifer Lynn Burroughs has overcome tremendous odds. Struck by a car June 28 after an evening class, Burroughs sustained severe injuries. She has endured numerous surgeries and months of hospitalization and rehabilitation. Owing to her steadfastness (her husband Greg might call it stubbornness), Burroughs will make a full recovery, but the road to recovery has been a long one and there are still miles to go.

Pitt Marketing Students “Shake It Up”!

Pitt marketing students have discovered that in order to break through perceptual barriers and advertise to their Generation Y peers, they must “Shake It Up”!

This fall, students across the University’s Oakland campus have had the opportunity to see the 2008 Honda Accord Coupe in places and ways that they would never have expected. As part of The Accord Coupe Marketing Challenge: New Car, New Generation, sponsored by American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and organized by EdVenture Partners, College of Business Administration students gained real-world experience as they ran their own marketing agency, Pros In Motion.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility is garnering lots of attention in the Czech Republic, and Katz/CBA professors are being called on to write articles and give interviews on the subject. Associate Professor Brad Agle was asked to write an article on the evolution of corporate social responsibility for Connection Magazine, a publication of The American Chamber of Commerce in Slovak Republic. He has also been asked to help the British Chamber of Commerce in Prague—the second-largest chamber in the Czech Republic and one that is working hard to establish proper business practices and is actively lobbying for legislative changes to help the local business community—determine responses to issues of conflict of interest and corporate governance.
