NOTES FROM THE DEAN

2007 Commencement

Commencement is a milestone in the life of every student. Receipt of a degree signals a student’s completion of a new level in the lifelong pursuit of knowledge. It often marks a transition from school to professional life or one career to another. For these reasons, commencement is a time to applaud graduates’ hard work, and it is the duty of the commencement speaker to put graduates’ hard work into the context of their future.

This spring, Katz/CBA awarded 110 master's degrees and 339 BSBA degrees. And we were honored to have two outstanding commencement speakers. We welcomed back Samme Thompson (MBA ’70), president of Telit Associates, Incorporated, a Chicago-based telecommunications consulting firm. He spoke to our MBA (two-year and part-time) and MS graduates. We also welcomed Sunil Wadhwani, cochair and CEO of iGate Corporation and a member of the Katz/CBA Board of Visitors, who spoke April 28 to our CBA graduates.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

Public vs. Private

According to Katz/CBA faculty members Leonce Bargeron, Frederik Schlingemann, and Chad Zutter. if a company you own stock in is ripe for a takeover, you should hope that the company acquiring it is not a private equity firm.

Hot Stuff

IEE Executive Director and Katz/CBA Assistant Dean Ann Dugan knows hot stuff when she sees it, particularly when a family business is concerned. Dugan was quoted in the March 30 New York Times regarding the McIlhenny Company, a fifth-generation family business and maker of Tabasco.

She’s Got a Ticket to Ride

Katz Alumna Kim Taylor (MBA/MPIA ’96) desperately needed some down time from her busy life as an entrepreneur, so she spent the summer of 2005 on the back of her Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The 3,664-mile solo motorcycle trip took her across nine states and taught her an important life lesson…ride like there’s no tomorrow!
