Penguins Pursue the Stanley Cup

NOTES FROM THE DEAN

There was great excitement in Pittsburgh this spring as the Penguins came close to capturing the National Hockey League (NHL) championship. While the Pens lost the series to the Detroit Red Wings in game six of the Stanley Cup finals, their effort suggests an important lesson relevant to everyone. It is possible to overcome adversity. In 2006, the Pens ranked 29th out of 30 teams in the NHL. In 2007, the team lost in the first round of the playoffs. In the off-season, the Pens were nearly sold and moved out of town. Despite these problems, the team strengthened its management, acquired new athletes, secured a deal for a new arena, and made many necessary changes. Players kept their focus on the ice and concentrated on becoming a better, stronger team. As a result of their persistence, they had an unforgettable 2008 season.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Scuttling the Scut Work

Katz alumnus Jordan Cohen (MBA '89) has helped roll out a large scale knowledge-outsourcing program (Office of the Future or OOF for short) at Pfizer where he is senior director of organizational effectiveness. The program frees Pfizer's most-prized workers from having to do their own support work like creating documents, manipulating and creating spreadsheets, scheduling meetings, and researching—tasks that once occupied 20-40 percent of their time. The program is a huge cost savings too; Pfizer now pays two outsourcing companies in India $15-$35 per worker hour for OOF services like research that a consulting company would have charged upwards of $215 per hour to complete. Read more about Pfizer's OOF program, which was featured in the February 2008 issue of Fast Company >
