NOTES FROM THE DEAN

The global marketplace is driving fundamental changes in the way the world does business. New producers, new markets, enhanced technologies, and integrated supply chains have changed the face of capitalism. These changes and the market volatility that accompanied them in 2008 have pressured accepted business education models. It is clear to me that business education must change if it is to succeed in preparing men and women for the challenges of global markets. And as I look critically at the business curriculum, program offerings, and opportunities we are making available to students at the University of Pittsburgh, I am confident that we are equipping our students with the skills and experiences to navigate the turbulence of today's global markets.

MBA Students

How do you build a learning community? With glue, ink, foam, and an openness to creative thinking. That is just what the incoming two-year MBA students discovered as they dove into team building activities during their transition module at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh and Oglebay Resort and Conference Center. Multicultural Learning Teams are the perfect setting for solving complex problems, but first team members must build camaraderie and learn other valuable lessons in working together. Murrell Makes Mentoring Work

Mentoring Book Cover

Mentoring is one of the most powerful tools for preparing tomorrow's leaders, but few enterprises know how to build and sustain an effective mentoring program. In the book Intelligent Mentoring: How IBM Creates Value through People, Knowledge, and Relationships that she coauthored with Sheila Forte-Trammell and Diana A. Bing, Audrey Murrell—associate professor of business administration, psychology, and public and international affairs and director of the David Berg Center for Ethics and Leadership—presents a state-of-the-art framework for making corporate mentoring programs work. Drawing on IBM's experience in fully integrating a diverse portfolio of mentoring initiatives, the authors offer specific guidelines and best practices for how to build a diverse portfolio of effective mentoring programs, use mentoring to strengthen organizational intelligence, build sustainable communities of mentors and mentees, promote collaboration across differences, and, above all, link mentoring to strategy and use it to sustain competitive advantage. Intelligent Mentoring is expected to be released for sale in mid-October, however Amazon.com, Inc. is currently taking pre-orders for the book>

Not a Typical Day at the Office

The trading floors can be pandemonium with traders and stock brokers waving their arms wildly and shouting at the tops of their lungs to make a transaction at precisely the right time, but rarely do financial professionals come to blows.
