To position the University of Pittsburgh School of Business as a national leader and regional anchor at the nexus of business, health, and technology—advancing healthier communities, stronger organizations, and a more resilient economy.

STRATEGIC FOCUS AREAS
1. Research and Innovation
The Initiative catalyzes cross-disciplinary research that translates knowledge into solutions improving health outcomes and system performance.
Focus areas:
- Scaling Science and Innovation for Impact — accelerating the design and commercialization of scalable health solutions through partnerships with Pitt’s MDI (Multidisciplinary Innovations group), Innovation Institute (a part of Pitt’s Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship), Innovation Works, and regional startups.
- Patient Engagement and Access —This research focuses on enhancing patient engagement, and designing interventions that reduce barriers to access.
- Health Systems Management — advancing operational excellence, financial sustainability, and patient-centered care.
- AI, Technology, and Human Well-Being — exploring how emerging technologies improve quality of life, accessibility, and equity.
- Leadership, Change Management, and Effective Teamwork — Research on understanding and implementing leadership, change management and teamwork approaches in healthcare and life sciences organizations.
By uniting scholars, clinicians, technologists, and entrepreneurs, the Initiative establishes Pitt as a national model for translating research into measurable impact.

Anchored in Pittsburgh’s world-class health and innovation ecosystem, the Initiative unites academia, industry, and community partners to accelerate inclusive regional growth.
Through strategic collaboration with university and regional partners the Initiative:
- Drives venture creation and commercialization of health innovations
- Strengthens regional talent pipelines through integrated education and training
- Stimulates investment and economic renewal in health and technology sectors
Together, these efforts position Western Pennsylvania as a national model for post-industrial transformation through health-driven innovation.
3. Education and Workforce Development
The Initiative builds on Pitt Business’s academic foundation to develop future-ready leaders who operate at the intersection of health, business, and technology.
Programs integrate leadership, operations, finance, strategy, and marketing with health systems understanding—preparing professionals to lead in a rapidly changing health economy through:
- Stackable business+health certificates for undergraduates and graduates
- Dual and joint degree programs with the health sciences
- Experiential learning collaborations with regional partners
- Summer academies and micro-credentials for early talent development
- Executive and professional education for current leaders
Together, these efforts will create a robust, interdisciplinary talent pipeline that fuels the region’s health innovation ecosystem.
4. Opportunities for Collaboration with Community Partners
The Business for Health Initiative will collaborate with community partners seeking to advance health, innovation, and prosperity. Opportunities include:
- Sponsoring research and innovation projects that translate discovery into practice
- Co-designing curricula and experiential learning to meet emerging workforce needs
- Building talent pipelines through internships, fellowships, and recruitment partnerships
- Investing in community programs that strengthen regional resilience and inclusion
Through collaborations with regional health systems, tech companies, and startups, participants will gain hands-on experience in venture creation, data analytics, digital health strategy, and responsible innovation—building the skills that employers increasingly demand. Joyce Bender
CEO & Founder,
Bender Consulting Services
Joyce Bender is Founder and CEO of Bender Consulting Services and the Bender Leadership Academy in Pittsburgh, both focused on employment for people with disabilities. After surviving a life-threatening epilepsy-related accident in 1985 that resulted in brain surgery and significant hearing loss, she dedicated her career to breaking down barriers for people with disabilities. She serves as Chair of the Epilepsy Association of Western and Central PA and has advised the U.S. State Department in eight countries.

Charles Bogosta
President,
Bogosta Enterprises
Chuck Bogosta is the retired Executive Vice President of UPMC, where he helped establish and lead key divisions, including UPMC International, Hillman Cancer Center, and Strategic Business Initiatives. His career blends leadership in academic medical systems with executive roles in healthcare startups focused on innovation and growth.

Johnny Dogun

Omnichannel Marketing,
Astra Zeneca
Johnny Dogun drives omnichannel marketing strategy for respiratory biologics at AstraZeneca, focusing on digital innovation and patient engagement. He has led initiatives in market access, contract operations, and brand transformation to support strategic growth and improved patient outcomes.

Jerry Fedele
Executive Advisor at Blue Sea Capital & Executive in Residence,
Lynn University
Jerry Fedele has played a key role in expanding healthcare systems and enhancing clinical programs to improve patient care and organizational performance. He now applies his knowledge to mentor emerging leaders and guide healthcare innovation.

Dwight Heron
Medical Director, Growth & Innovation,
Bon Secours Mercy Health
Dwight Heron is the immediate past president & currently chair of the board of the American College of Radiation Oncology. EMBA 42 grad who has directed the growth and integration of comprehensive oncology programs, enhancing clinical research, patient experience, and integration global practice networks. His leadership has advanced state-of-the-art remote treatment planning, clinical pathways, and academic training to improve cancer care outcomes

Diane Holder
Executive Vice President, UPMC
President, UPMC Insurance Services Division
President and CEO, UPMC Health Plan
Diane Holder has led health care innovation for over 30 years. As immediate past President and CEO of UPMC Health Plan and Insurance Services and Executive Vice President of UPMC, she built a family of companies serving four million members with over $17 billion in revenue. Previously, she served as President of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and founding CEO of Community Care Behavioral Health, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit Behavioral Health Management Organizations.

Mike Rapach oversees government programs and health plans at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, managing strategy and operations across multiple states. He directs a large team responsible for serving hundreds of thousands of members while maintaining strong regulatory and board relationships.
SUMMARY
The Business for Health Initiative unifies Pitt’s strengths in education, research, and innovation to improve health outcomes and economic vitality through business innovation and leadership.
