Research. Education. Impact.
The David Berg Center for Ethics and Leadership was established in 1999 as part of the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and College of Business Administration at the University of Pittsburgh. Our mission is to add value to organizations through ethical leadership. To accomplish this, we focus on creating and utilizing knowledge through research, experience-based teaching, and active community engagement.
Our Mission
In these uncertain and ever-changing times, leadership and ethics are at the heart of Pitt Business’s Paths to Distinction and the Plan for Pitt. Accordingly, we explore the interface between ethics and leadership, emphasizing the interdependence between these two important concepts. Doing so helps provide leaders with a moral compass to handle complex challenges, enhancing both individual and organizational effectiveness.
To accomplish this, the center focuses on three key activity groups:
Research
The Berg Center is a thought leader on the topics of leadership and ethics. The Center runs and funds a research lab consisting of faculty, doctoral, post-doctoral, and undergraduate students to conduct new research in these areas. We believe that the Center can have an impact by creating and disseminating knowledge on leadership and ethics to scholars and practitioners alike.
Education
We seek to train the next generation of leaders at all levels of the university. Learning-by-doing, or experience-based learning, is a huge part of our mission. For example, our David Berg fellows work with local organizations to help them with pressing issues. We also run the COLE program, training Pitt staff on several topics including mentoring, talent development, effective communication, and situational leadership. Additionally, we’re working with faculty across the school to develop best practices for leaders to implement equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) practices and utilize flexible/hybrid work arrangements.
Impact
The Center is aligned with the Berg Foundation’s mission to “strengthen institutions and improve the quality of life for the under-served.” As such, we collaborate both internally with other centers at Pitt and externally with local organizations. This includes a broad portfolio of community and social engagement projects, seminars, case competitions and public dissemination of center-sponsored research and scholarships.
