All University graduate students have until Nov. 24 to apply for the fifth annual Super Analytics Challenge, hosted by the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business. This competition presents an opportunity for grad students from Pitt, Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, Penn State University, and West Virginia University to interact with corporate executives and harness the power of data analytics to serve as catalysts for change.

This year’s Challenge will address health care for the homeless, with the goal of connecting people who have unstable living situations with the health care they need. The Challenge will work closely with Allegheny General Hospital’s Center for Inclusion Health and Veteran’s Health Administration.

Students from unique backgrounds will team up to frame a problem, create a data methodology, and generate operable proposals for solutions. In addition, they will interact with a variety of senior technology and data executives at Fortune 500 corporations and local community organizations.

A New Format

This year, the Challenge format has changed. The Hackathon-style competition will feature asynchronous components beginning in January 2025 and will conclude with an on-site weekend of events at the University of Pittsburgh from February 7-9, 2025. Events will include a professional development conference and a job fair.

A recording of the Nov. 8 information session is available via Panopto. Interested grad students can apply through this form. Ten teams of five students each will be created after reviewing application materials. Participants should prepare for a time commitment since they will take part in activities leading up to the main challenge efforts in February. The top three teams will win cash prizes.

This year’s topic calls back to the first Challenge in 2021, which worked with the Allegheny County Department of Human Services to provide resources to the unhoused population during the COVID-19 pandemic. The winning solution brought a handwashing station to the South Side neighborhood.
