With great sadness, we share the passing of Gershon Mandelker, the Katz Alumni Chair Professor Emeritus of Finance and Business Administration. He was a wonderful colleague, friend, and proud teacher and mentor to many MBA and PhD students throughout his 30+ years of service.
Mandelker touched the lives of many through his teaching and research. His research goal was to advance and test theories that explain the economic behavior of individuals, firms, and capital markets, and his work was published in numerous journals and books.
Mandelker earned his PhD and MBA from the University of Chicago and his BA in economics and statistics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Mandelker was born in a small village in Poland around 1936. During World War II, he and his father survived the Holocaust by hiding underground, in the woods, and in haystacks. After the war, he lived in several displaced persons camps until he got to Israel, where he pursued his bachelor’s degree. Education meant everything to his father and to Mandelker, a value he would pass on to his children.
