Ira J. Gumberg: H.J. Zoffer Medal for Meritorious Service Award

Ira J. Gumberg is the Chairman and CEO of J.J. Gumberg Co., a leading real estate development company that maintains a portfolio of numerous shopping centers throughout the U.S. and the subcontinent of India. Recognizing the tremendous opportunity for organized retail outside the U.S., he launched Gumberg Global, where he engages in international real estate development with a focus on emerging markets.

Gumberg leads a fully integrated organization that focuses on the acquisition and development of investment-grade real estate within retail and commercial sectors. As a third-generation leader, he has been instrumental in growing the nearly 100-year-old company through the careful analysis of retail trends, the recruitment and development of a highly experienced executive team and the ability to act decisively in order to maximize new growth opportunities.

In addition to his prior board appointments to the Mellon Financial Corporation and Jo-Ann Stores, Inc., Gumberg has been named to several other Board of Directors, including the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). He is a Trustee, Member of the Educational Affairs and Enrollment Committee, and Member of the Finance Committee of Carnegie Mellon University; Trustee of the University of Pittsburgh, where he serves on the Budget, Institutional Advancement and Investment Committees; and Chairman of the Board of Visitors of the University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and College of Business Administration.

Gumberg earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Pittsburgh and attended the Advanced Management Program (AMP) at the Harvard Graduate School of Business.

He and his wife, Anita P. Courcoulas, M.D., reside in Pittsburgh with their two younger children.
