The future of brand management isn’t just strong storytelling and creative execution designed to improve KPIs. Instead, there is a greater importance on how leaders build guardrails necessary for AI agents interacting with current and potential customers.

As AI agents assume a greater role in handling customer service, search, recommendations, and live transactions, brand leadership is reaching a critical inflection point. Chief marketing officers must still create and manage the message but also orchestrate and govern a message distribution system including humans, partners, and algorithmic agents.

Building a Brain Trust: The Pitt Business Executive Roundtable

How do we unlock AI’s potential while safeguarding our brands from the risks of errors and reputational harm? That was the core question when marketing leaders from healthcare, financial services, consulting, technology, and non-profits convened on April 6, 2026, at the Executive Roundtable hosted by the  University of Pittsburgh School of Business Center for Branding.

Associate Dean for Research and Strategic Initiatives, Vanitha Swaminathan, started the Executive Roundtable on Governance in the Age of AI   with a discussion of her framework of “agentic branding” from her book, Hyper-Digital Marketing: Six Pillars of Strategic Brand Marketing in an AI-Powered World.

Using Swaminathan’s six pillars—purpose, systems, personalization, platforms, participation, and partnerships— as a starting point, executives shared how they are moving beyond experimentation to precision marketing.

The beauty of meeting with other executives in this type of setting is learning from each other and walking away with action items. The Vice President of Marketing AI Strategy and Enablement at BNY, Anna Rohac, left with a goal to create a governance framework.

“I think so much of the discussion today was about how do we have that governance for our brand integrity. So that’s something that I want to take back and really document what we’re comfortable using AI for and what AI should not be used for.”

Over the next three years, AI agents will shift from peripheral tools to core customer touchpoints — service, search, recommendations, transactions, and relationship maintenance. Traditional brand management models, built for controlled channels and human-mediated interactions, will not survive this transition.

What follows is the blueprint born out of that first meeting—a forward-looking framework for how CMOs and CEOs can build national, cross-industry governance standards for the agentic era.

Formation of a Strategic National Council

To protect an organization’s brand while simultaneously embracing innovation, this council will establish strategic foundations. The governance objective is to ensure brand voice, visual identity, and core values remain consistent across every automated interaction.

This group will capture the most pressing governance gaps the CMO identify across sectors and create recommendations as to how to develop Human-in-the-Loop override protocols. These protocols will create clear operational rules that define when, how, and why human intervention supersedes an AI decision.

Once this protocol is developed, it will be documented to aid in its enforcement.

Development of a Policy Framework

The key elements of the policy plan will be data use, model transparency, brand voice protection, compliance, risk scoring, and agent accountability.

Since CMOs do not work in a vacuum, policy decisions should also involve legal and compliance. This cross-functioning alignment will help create an actionable governance plan and will clarify the responsibilities across marketing, legal, IT and the AI Governance council.

The Impact of the AI Brand Governance Council

One goal of the council is to share what they learn with the world.

After they create their charter and decision-making structure, they will work together to shape foundational governance models. Their frameworks, case studies, and governance insights will be published to help both the marketing community and the public.

As consumers become increasingly aware of AI’s usage in content development, conversational agents and other uses, transparency is needed to build confidence in the organization’s’ brand.

Next Steps

At the first roundtable, the executives identified the need to teach employees how to effectively use AI.  Pitt Business is meeting that need with an immersive workshop this fall.

This workshop moves beyond AI hype to practical application. Through expert instruction, live demonstrations, and collaborative exercises, attendees will learn how to use AI to solve real business challenges and build reusable workflows that improve productivity and decision-making.

By the end of this workshop, every participant will leave with practical AI workflows they can immediately use. This workshop is offered both online and in-person and takes place, Friday, October 30, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
