What Makes a Strong Pitt Business Application?

At Pitt Business, we use a holistic admissions approach that goes beyond test scores and GPAs. We evaluate six key dimensions of your candidacy:

Academic Readiness

We assess your ability to succeed in rigorous coursework, particularly quantitative courses. If your GPA doesn’t tell the full story, use your optional essay to provide context about challenges you’ve overcome.

Professional Experience & Career Goals

MBA Applicants: Show how your work history connects to career goals and how our program fits your trajectory.

MS Applicants: Demonstrate clear career objectives and specialization interests, even with limited work experience.

Leadership Potential

We look for leadership experience or initiative—managing teams, leading projects, coaching, peer leadership, or demonstrating career growth.

Program Fit

We evaluate whether you’ll thrive in our distinctive learning environment and take full advantage of our resources. Are you someone who will actively engage in experiential learning opportunities, connect with our executives in residence, utilize career development services, and contribute meaningfully to classroom discussions? We want to ensure you’re positioned for success both during and after your time at Pitt Business.

Communication Skills

Professional communication is essential for academic success and career advancement. We assess your ability to articulate goals clearly, present yourself professionally, and engage effectively in business settings. Strong communication skills are critical for classroom participation, networking at our many events, and interviewing successfully in the job market. We provide resources to help you develop these skills, and we look for candidates ready to grow in these areas.

Diversity of Perspectives

We cultivate a learning environment enriched by diverse backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints. What unique perspective will you contribute to your classmates, faculty, and staff? We learn from students just as much as students learn from us. Different walks of life, professional experiences, and personal journeys create the collaborative, innovative culture that makes Pitt Business distinctive.

International Application and Visa Considerations

The University of Pittsburgh welcomes applications from talented students worldwide. However, current federal travel bans may prevent admitted students from certain countries from obtaining a visa to study in the United States. We recommend that students from these countries who do not have a valid U.S. visa and/or are currently living outside of the United States delay their application until there is a clear pathway to obtain a student visa.

Prospective international students can review the current information about U.S. entry on the Office of International Services website.
