  • MBA Applicants: Explain how your prior experience led you to pursue an MBA, articulate clear short-term and long-term career goals, and demonstrate how our specific program will help you achieve them

Formatting Guidelines

Bullet Point Strategy:

  • Current/most recent position: Up to 5 bullets (most relevant and important listed first)
  • Previous positions: Fewer bullets, decreasing as you go back chronologically
  • Don’t repeat the same skill across multiple positions. It’s understood you carry skills forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need work experience to apply?

MBA programs typically prefer 2-7 years of professional experience, but we evaluate candidates with varied backgrounds through our holistic admissions process. MS programs do not require post-undergraduate work experience. Internships, co-ops, and academic projects are valuable demonstrations of readiness.

What test scores do I need to submit?

Test score requirements vary by program. For most of our programs the GRE and GMAT are optional. Visit our program-specific admissions requirements page for detailed information about GMAT, GRE, or test-waiver options.

How long does the application review process take?

Most applications are reviewed within 4-6 weeks of completion. MBA applicants will be contacted to schedule an interview with an Executive in Residence.

Should I submit the optional essay?

The optional essay is truly optional. Use it strategically to explain circumstances (like a lower GPA), share formative life experiences, or address gaps in your application. Only submit if you have meaningful additional information that doesn’t appear elsewhere.

Can I apply to multiple programs simultaneously?

Yes, you can apply to multiple Pitt Business graduate programs through a single BusinessCAS application. Ensure your essays and materials are tailored to each specific program’s focus and requirements.

 

International Application and Visa Considerations

The University of Pittsburgh welcomes applications from talented students worldwide. However, current federal travel bans may prevent admitted students from certain countries from obtaining a visa to study in the United States. We recommend that students from these countries who do not have a valid U.S. visa and/or are currently living outside of the United States delay their application until there is a clear pathway to obtain a student visa.
