Joint and Dual Degree // MBA and Doctor of Medicine

Masters student

MBA/Doctor of Medicine

The University of Pittsburgh seeks students who are ready for learning opportunities at the nexus of business and healthcare and a desire to pursue the knowledge and practice to lead in complex and challenging healthcare environments. A student’s skillset is only as valuable as the tools they equip themselves with. A collaboration between the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM) allows future physicians to get a complete 360-degree view of healthcare.

Being able to manage teams and understand finances is essential to simultaneously improving patient outcomes and reducing the cost of healthcare.  Medical students will benefit from an additional understanding of business to be successful—particularly in roles such as medical director, chief executive officer, etc.

Students will be able to obtain both degrees in five years.

Requirements

To graduate with both an MD and an MBA, students must complete 33 credits at Pitt Business, with 12 shared credits provided by UPSOM that count toward both degrees. After completing their first two (or three) years at UPSOM, students transfer to Pitt Business to complete the MBA degree in one year and then return to UPSOM to finish their MD degree.

At Pitt Business, students will complete 25.5 core credits and 7.5 elective credits. Typically, MBA coursework is undertaken during a break in the MD curriculum, often in August after the second year. The standard course load for an MBA student is 15 credits per semester, allowing completion of 30 credits over the fall and spring semesters. The remaining 3 credits will be completed based on student interest and course availability, often within the first half of the summer term.

For more information on the requirements, faculty, and admission for the MD portion of the program, please see the UPSOM website.
